Speaking on ‘Any Driven Monday’, Jenson Button gave his take on the Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez feud and believes Red Bull’s possible lack of team communication may have put themselves in this position.
Jenson Button says he was “surprised” Red Bull drivers exchanged furious radio messages after Max Verstappen refused to allow Sergio Perez to pass him on the final lap of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
An angry Perez suggested “that shows who he really is” in reaction to Verstappen denying him a clear run to P6 on the final lap and in turn hampering his teammates’ chances of finishing second in the Drivers’ Championship.
When he refused to let Perez through, back-to-back champion Verstappen had insisted on team radio “I gave my reasons”, seemingly pointing to previous discussions with Red Bull before the race.
Former F1 champion Jenson Button believes the 25-year-old missed an easy chance to leave on a positive note.
“I’m more surprised by Czeko’s comment, I’m like, ‘it shows who he really is,’” Button told Any Driven Monday. “It’s difficult because we only hear one side of him, we don’t hear what his reasons are.

Max Verstappen refuses to let teammate Sergio Perez back in and is furious with Red Bull on team radio.
“It doesn’t look good and when you hear his comments saying ‘no, I’m not letting him through, I have my reasons’, if we don’t hear the reasons we think Max is being selfish, he’s not thinking about the team or his teammate.
“I saw something in the media, I don’t know if it’s real, but I think he was very upset about the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying where Czeko ended up in the wall.
“Maybe that was his reason for not wanting to give way to Czecho because it hurt his qualifying in Monaco and maybe he thought that Czecho found the wall easier than he should have.”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen says he had his reasons for not giving way back to teammate Sergio Perez at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner said after the race that the team would prioritize trying to secure second place for Perez at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi finale.
“Max could have come out of it so well, the world champion letting his team-mate through so he can fight for second place in the championship,” added Button.
“You have to ask Red Bull, if they have discussed it beforehand like Max said, then why are they asking him to do it in the race?

“It seems like they haven’t discussed it properly before the race weekend as a team and that seems like a bigger issue, it seems like Red Bull have put themselves in this situation which is definitely negative marketing.
“It’s a real shame because, as I say, it could have been a perfect end to the race. The mistake in the first part of the race with Lewis was an incident that we didn’t want to see, but to come out and say ‘here you go Checo, here you go a few points and now you’re second in the championship, we’re going to finish first and second’, it’s awesome.
“But that story is not the story we have.”
