Apple had already teased at a WWDC 2022 session that iOS 16 would add 12 new subcategories to its SMS filtering API. With beta 2, they are now available to developers for use. The company said iOS 16 beta 2 “allows developers to sort incoming SMS from unknown numbers into 12 new subcategories in the Transactions and Promotion categories for better organization.” Additionally, dual-SIM iPhone users can now filter their messages based on their SIMs. They can select the “All lines” display or just the primary or secondary SIM number. With iOS 16 beta 2, Apple also said that for select US providers, Messages extends “Report Spam” to allow users to report spam SMS / providers to providers. The selection is visible in Messages from Unknown Senders. Last but not least, for Indian users, Messages now supports the export of SMS events. These event and meeting messages are presented as Siri suggestions and are also presented to users in the Messaging thread and Calendar Inbox. Apple also recognizes an error in Messages in iOS 16 beta 2: When you try to reply to an existing reply thread, the replies may scroll to the wrong position. 9to5Mac will continue to report as we learn more about iOS 16 beta 2 and other updates for other operating systems.
