(Photo courtesy of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.) A mix of snow, rain and windy conditions made for a messy Saturday for the majority of the province. Many areas of the island received the first snowfall of the year while other areas were flooded by heavy rains. Tiffany Cheeks, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says snowfall amounts weren’t high, with areas like Deer Lake recording 8 centimeters. But snow mixed with ice pellets and rain made for a messy afternoon on the west coast as RCMP in Deer Lake and Corner Brook responded to a series of collisions yesterday as a result of slippery road conditions. In terms of rain and wind, the area most affected was the southwest coast. It says Port aux Basques recorded the most rainfall at 84.1mm, while wind gusts of 120km/h were recorded in the Wreckhouse area. Cheeks says while this weather system is underway, another similar weather system is forecast for the island on Monday. Expect to see another mix of rain, freezing rain and snow with Avalon and the South Coast seeing mostly showers while the Central is expected to see a bit of everything.
