The provincial government has put together a more detailed description of what’s available to people on the southwest coast about compensation and housing replacement after Hurricane Fiona. The budget framework, announced at a public meeting in Port aux Basques last night, sets the replacement value at a minimum of $200 per square foot. That works out to $400,000 for a 2,000 square meter home. There is also a valuation process for the land, as much of it along the coastline has been invaded by storm surge. Insurance adjusters are still making their assessments. The contents of the properties will be covered under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements scheme. About 85 to 90 houses were either washed away, rendered uninhabitable or beyond reasonable repair. Anyone needing housing, financial or other support should contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582. Individual homeowners, renters, small business owners, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, local service districts and municipalities can take advantage of federal assistance at 1-888-395-5611.
