Dozens of residents made their way to the city limits on Highway 17B this afternoon to take a first look at the brand new Garden River community sign. The sign was made and unveiled just in time for National Indigenous Day, where Canadians across the country are celebrating the cultures, heritage and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples. Andy Rickard, Head of Garden River First Nation, says the welcome sign was long overdue and does not appreciate the efforts of Darlene Solomon, Brandi Nolan and Laird Signs that helped make it possible. “It’s been in the works for the last year,” he says. “Yesterday, they worked through the rain and mud, and without their dedication and commitment to do this for today, none of this would have been possible.” The sign includes a solar panel at the top, as well as many lights to make it visible at night. Most importantly, the sign pays homage to the values of the Garden River and proudly features the iconic “This Is Indian Land” bridge. In addition to celebrating the completion of the signal, Chief Ricard explains why June 21 is such a special day for their community. “It’s always a special day for our community,” he says. “It’s time for us to reflect on our resilience, the diversity and the beauty of our cultures and languages across Canada. I want to recognize the leaders of the past, especially the Garden River. Leader Shingwauk has made a great contribution to this country. My grandfather was one of the Leaders who recognized this day in the 80’s. It’s a special moment for our people. “ To help celebrate National Indigenous Day, Garden River will also host a free event at the Leisure Center tonight from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and shelves.
