Final: Fulham 1-2 Manchester United

And that’s it. At the end of a terrific, hard-fought game, Fulham tasted defeat unfairly, but Garnacho announced his arrival with a match-winning performance. A terrifically well-worked goal, too, himself and Eriksen keeping their cool under pressure to open up the Fulham backline brilliantly.

TARGET! Fulham 1-2 Manchester United (Garnazzo 93)

United win it in the last minute of extra time. Again United attack down the left, this time Eriksen gets forward and plays a one-two-three with Garnazzo, who is suddenly on goal. The Argentine drives in a calm left-footed finish to decide the game! Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnazzo scores their second goal. Photo: Clive Rose/Getty Images Updated at 18:25 GMT 90 min: Casemiro pushes the ball into the box, Rehm flicks it on and Fernandes meets it at the back to head across goal. He pleads for an attacker to hit it, but there is none there and Fernandes seems to take this as a personal affront. Cairney is replaced by Onomah. 88 mins: Every United attack today seems to have gone through Shaw. This time the left back lifts an early cross to McTominay on the edge of the box. This time the midfielder gets a header right but it’s too wide and Leno saves. Fulham clear James, whose low cross from the right is deflected behind Lindelof at full stretch. 86 min: Palhinia, superb today, breaks up a promising United attack with a ferocious sliding tackle on Rashford and wins a free-kick to get his side off to a flying start. 82 mins: Some very neat passing from the back from United before McTominay sells Palhinia a dummy and turns the game around for Garnazzo. He frees Shaw in the overlap and the full-back’s cross picks out McTominay for a great team goal… but the midfielder sends a free header wide. Great opportunity! 80 mins: Fulham win a free-kick on the right. Pereira takes it and, seeing Palhinia moving away, gives his team-mate a free header – but the Portuguese misjudges and sends the ball wide. 78 mins: James breaks out down the right again, this time opting not to beat Martinez but instead go for the first cross, belted in by the retreating Lindelof. 74 min: Garnazzo collects the ball on the left and drives dangerously into the box, falling to the challenge of Decordova-Reid. No penalty. A minute later, he does the same again, this time without claiming the penalty. He brought United to life. 71 mins: James makes a run down the right to leave Martinez dead, but he doubles instead of crossing and his ball is eventually clipped into the box. United send Garnazzo for Martial. 69 min: Martial drops deep to collect the ball and looks to pick out Rashford who swings down the left, but the Fulham defense closes the door on him. Casemiro picks up the ball and curls a long ball back towards Martial, who watches awkwardly as it sails over his head. 65 min: Fulham are hungry for a second. A spell of sustained pressure culminates with Casemiro heading Robinson’s cross over his own bar.

Target! Fulham 1-1 Manchester United (James 61)

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Fulham go ahead when Robinson’s early ball to Willian leaves the Brazilian running free on the left. He carries, carries and then waits until the right moment to release to the overlapping Cairney, whose low left-foot cross invites the former United man to tap home. It obliges. Fulham’s Daniel James scores his first goal. Photo: David Klein/Reuters Updated at 18.11 GMT 59 mins: Narrative alert: Daniel James comes on for Harry Wilson. 58 mins: Another Fulham attack goes as far as Vinicius before he is cleared. They start down the right again, from where Pereira hits a lovely deep cross which Malacia sees out for a corner. 55 mins: Change for United – Elanga, McTominay off. 51 min: Wilson breaks down the right and curls in a low cross to Vinicius at the back post. He turns and hits a left-footed shot, but it’s straight at De Gea, who parries it wide. The corner is worked to Cairney, who floats a cross to Ream at the back stick. The defender meets it hard, but again De Gea is there to palm the ball. 50 mins: Martial works Leno again with a 20-yard shot but it’s too close to the keeper who collects easily. 48 mins: Fernandes looks down the inside left channel and slips to Elagas, whose early low effort is well saved by Leno. Rashford follows, but his shot can’t get through a wall of defenders. 47 mins: Willian feeds Vinicius down the left and the Brazilian’s low cross is cut out by Lindelof before reaching Pereira. When the corner comes in, the ball is half-cleared and breaks to Cairney on the edge of the box, but he slices over. Updated at 17:35 GMT 46 mins: And we’re back. Fulham start and attempt a couple of attacks in route-1, both of which are limited by Lindelof. Cary Tulinius writes: “Manchester United’s players are surprisingly static. If he remembers, Ten Hag’s Ajax were always on the move, but United are standing tall. Although it may be because United’s players are saving energy for the World Cup.” Half-time reading, from elsewhere in the Premier League:

Half time: Fulham 0-1 Manchester United

And this is the final act of a lively half. Fulham have shown plenty of attacking ambition without really creating much. United have picked their moments to strike and it could be two. Put on the kettle. 45 mins: Shaw, arguably United’s best player this half, charges forward and is pulled down by Palhinia, who escapes a booking. Martinez then sweeps the ball forward to Elanga, whose clever backheel finds Fernandes in the corner of the area. He squares Eriksen, who times his arrival perfectly, but from the penalty spot sends a simple finish the wrong side of the post. Updated at 17:21 GMT 41mins: United put in a decent attack, Rashford lay back for Shaw, whose first-time clipped cross found Martial, but the striker’s header flashed just wide. 40 mins: Lindelof, horrified by the Fulham press, heads the ball straight out of play. Fulham get in front again but the attack breaks down with Vinicius, not for the first time, failing to hold the ball up. Updated at 17:21 GMT 38 mins: Fernandes tries a silly tackle in his own half, Fulham pounce and Pereira swings in a beautiful cross that looks into another corner. United are officially down. 34 mins: Another dangerous Willian cross is cleared by the United central midfielder. My kingdom for a Serbian target man. Robinson then turns down the same flank to win a corner – Malacia is clearly the target here – which hangs up for a sublime volley that Willian fires high and wide. 33 min: Willian, Fulham’s best striker so far, turns left once more and fires home a cross that Martinez heads home. As Rashford tears away from the pitch, Reid is adjudged closed for stopping him in his tracks. 30 min: Eriksen picks out Rashford on the left, who pushes the ball into the box, where he has opened a hole in the Fulham defence. Martial, realizing he’s in the goal, takes a shot that goes through Leno’s legs, but loses enough pace for the keeper to step back and stop him from crossing the line. 29 mins: Wilson tries his luck again, cutting in from the right and curling one in from 20 yards, which De Gea two-punches home. Have fun with this. 26 mins: Pereira curls brilliantly away from Martinez on the edge of the box and slips the ball behind the United defense for Wilson, who stretches to deflect goalwards. De Gea makes an instinctive save before the flag goes up against Wilson – a tight one. 23 mins: The game has settled into a pattern with Fulham patiently probing and United looking to go on the break. Palhinia breaks up a United counterattack with a terrific tackle on Elanga, who had broken clear on the right. 20 mins: Willian is involved again, this time coming in from the left and attempting the long curler. It flies well wide. United go up the other end of the pitch and Fernandes’ glorious deep cross picks out Rashford alone at the back post. It gets to an awkward height for Rashford, who goes on goal – but it was offside. 19 mins: Pereira collects the ball on the edge of the box and leaves the onrushing Willian. He hits the byline but his pull-back can’t find a white shirt. 18 mins: Casemiro tries the shot from his own half. It’s nowhere near the mark. Not the kind of intervention it was bought for.

Target! Fulham 0-1 Manchester United (Eriksen 14)

Cairney is caught in possession by Casemiro on the halfway line and in a flash, Martial rushes forward, feeds Fernandes down the left and the Portuguese square into the six-yard box for Eriksen to slot home. Casemiro started it with the unacceptable interference for which he was bought. Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen scores the opening goal. Photo: Javier García/REX/ShutterstockEriksen celebrates with teammates. Photo: Tolga Akmen/EPA Updated at 17.06 GMT 13 mins: Rashford dislodges Ronaldinho, trying to beat Decordova-Reid with a tire. It doesn’t quite come off – good fun though. 11 mins: Fulham have turned the tables. Willian moves forward but can’t feed Vinicius in the box, before Robinson drifts in a cross at the back which Shaw scratches clear. 9 mins: United’s first real attack comes as Shaw bends a ball down the line for Rashford, who moves into the area and lays off to Martial. For a second he sees the goal, but tries to get through two defenders and is crowded out. 7 mins: Fulham try to attack down their left. After Wilson switches well, Palhinha wrestles Malacia to the ground but his floating cross goes wide for a goal. 5 mins: Eriksen is latched on to the ball by Palhinia, making a smart start…
