Give me your driver’s license, registration and insurance. As Nicholas was searching for registration in his mother’s car and getting his license, the police officer added: “This is how you are killed here, my friend.” While it remains unclear whether the White Officer’s comment was tantamount to a threat or observation about seat belt safety, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced Monday that the motorcycle police officer is being investigated after the video of the incident went viral. “The officer’s patrol duty has been changed to administrative office duties pending a full investigation into the officer’s traffic stop, comments and conduct,” the department said in a press release. “Rest assured that we are committed to the transparency and trust of the community and will address all issues of public concern fairly, justly and in accordance with applicable law.” The officer has not yet been publicly identified and the department is hiding additional comments until the investigation is completed. George Perez, the interim director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, told the Miami Herald that what the officer was suggesting was what prompted him to order the investigation. “This is exactly the conclusion that bothers me,” Perez said. Nicolas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He told the WFLA this week that the exchange has upset him. One of the captions accompanying his video on TikTok says that being black in America is a “crime, according to Miami Dade police.” “I was scared, I was scared,” he said. “I did not think my life would do it.” More than 1,000 people were shot and killed by police last year, according to the Washington Post. Shall we say it again? Say what you just said,” Nicholas said, according to a video.
