Several Hamilton fire brigades responded to the multi-storey building at 44 Glen Rd., Near Main and Macklin Streets, around 2:45 p.m. for fire reports in a multi-alarm structure. At the spot, smoke was seen coming out of a unit on the 11th floor. His balcony was covered in soot and his windows were broken. The fire brigade tweeted that the fire was extinguished at the entrance. It caused extensive damage to the affected unit and is considered suspicious. About three dozen occupants burst out of the 14-story building and into Macklin amid the sound of fire alarms. Wael Abdelkader said he called 911 after spotting smoke shots under a neighbor’s door that looked charred. “All the neighbors on the floor, we started running out together,” he said, standing next to his family. “My wife is pregnant. She was running so fast that she almost slipped. We are worried about our unit – it is on the same floor.” Down on the fifth floor, as fire alarms sounded, a strange Tryistan Callaghan came out onto his balcony. “A rubber band, the smell of smoke,” he said. “I knew there was a fire and I went out and knocked on my neighbor’s door on the street to tell him. “I have my two cats in there, but I did not have enough time to get them out from under the couch.” Firefighters remained at the scene from 5 p.m. SHARE:
