Hondan Hassi died after a bloody brawl at LIT nightclub just before 3am on November 5. Saskatoon police say the incident involved another woman known to them. Paige Theriault-Fisher, 22, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. A family member in Ottawa told the CBC that Hassey had moved to Saskatoon in the summer of 2021 after graduating from Sir Robert Borden High School. According to the relative, Hashi’s family lived in Saskatoon for a year in 2015 and Hashi wanted to return to a familiar place to pursue higher education. She was working in the city, they said, and was going to Saskatchewan Polytechnic in January to continue her studies in early childhood education. “It’s really devastating that she was taken from us like this,” a friend, who did not want to be identified, told CBC in messages exchanged on social media. “He would always have your back no matter what.” Hassi was one of nine siblings, the relative said. “She was truly loved … and had so many people who knew and loved her.” Police remained at the scene of the fight in downtown Saskatoon on Monday. (Dan Zakreski/CBC) Hussey’s friend wrote to the CBC, describing her as “a sweet, loving and kind young girl with lots of ambition [who] he never failed to put a smile on my face.” “She doesn’t deserve what happened to her,” they said.

Fatal battle

The video provided to the CBC shows events leading up to Hassi’s death. Two women can be seen wrestling each other while spectators watch. Screams and screams can be heard in the background as both women fall to the ground. One repeatedly punches the other in the face and neck as her head hits the floor. Over the speaker system, a person can be heard saying, “We’ve got a b—h race on the track.” Then, as the two women roll to the floor in the altercation, a pool of blood emerges from under the woman identified in the video as Hassey. Paige Theriault-Fisher is charged with manslaughter in the death of Hodan Hashi. (Paige Theriault-Fisher/Facebook) An eyewitness told the CBCfrom her vantage point, it was clear that Hassi was injured when she fell on broken glass on the floor. Witnesses also said security at the bar responded to the fight immediately after the DJ announced it over the public address system and someone pulled a fire alarm prompting people to rush outside. The CBC contacted the owners of the LIT nightclub, who gave a statement. “Our facility and staff have and will continue to provide whatever assistance we can to those involved,” said the email from Blue Clegg of CYFJ Holdings. “Out of respect for all involved, we will not be commenting further at this time.” Theriault-Fisher remains in custody and her next court appearance is set for Thursday. Hassey’s family is currently working to bring her body back to Ottawa. They are also raising money to pay for transportation and funeral expenses. The GoFundMe page describes Hassy as “a kind, gentle, giving soul who would give the shirt off her back to anyone who needed it.”
