Despite loosening health constraints and higher vaccination rates, the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. On June 8, the head of the Canadian Civil Service, Dr. Teresa Tam told members of parliament that she was continuing, adding that there was a real threat of a seventh wave. Dr. Janet DeMille of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Unit (TBDHU) told Acadia News on Monday that because we are dealing with the Omicron variant, it is difficult to predict when it will strike. “It was BA in January. 1 sub-variant, and after May was the BA. 2 sub-variants “, added DeMille. “Omicron is different, which means that (the wave) can hit in July or August or it can be delayed until September or October, which would be nice to see. “(Our region) has a decent level of immunity, either through the vaccine or through people who have had infections, all of which will contribute to overall protection.” The majority of cases reported in TBDHU, according to DeMille, are COVID-19 variant BA.2. DeMille stressed that the virus has not disappeared. “What we see in other parts of the world, including some parts of the United States, and there is even a slight increase in Ontario in wastewater monitoring. “It could mean that the Omicron is still spreading and we are expecting further waves, I just hope that the next wave will not reach us until the autumn.” Tam told the Commons health committee that two doses of the vaccine are only 20 percent effective against Omicron, while taking three doses increases the effectiveness to 60 percent. As of June 14, 80,608 people at TBDHU have received three doses of the vaccine while nearly 18,000 have received four doses. The protection measures are the same:
Stay home if you are sick Use of fast antigen tests Coverage when you are indoors Improved ventilation and use of higher quality filters
Five of the 29 patients at the Thunder Bay Regional Center for Health Sciences (TBRHSC) admitted for COVID-19 need Intensive Care. Acadia News will have more with Dr. DeMille on going back to school in September later this week
