The 37-year-old went towards Cancelo in an attempt to diffuse the situation by putting his hand behind the defender’s head rather tightly. The Manchester United duo appeared to have a frosty encounter when they arrived for Portugal training The United duo had a tough encounter as they linked up with the national team shortly after Ronaldo’s bombshell interview where he criticized the current state of the club. Despite Fernandes’ cold reception towards his team-mate, Benfica and Portugal midfielder Joao Mario insisted there is no rift between the two players. Speaking at Portugal’s press conference on Tuesday, Mario said: “I was in the dressing room at the time, I saw pictures. “It was a joke between them because Bruno was one of the last to arrive and Cristiano asked if he had come by boat. It was a joke between them, they play together.’ Benfica and Portugal star Joao Mario has denied suggestions there was a rift between them Mario claims that Fernandez’s late arrival was what caused a confused look on Ronaldo’s face, as opposed to the embarrassment caused by the latter’s telling interview. Both of these incidents follow Ronaldo’s interview where he revealed he had “no respect” for current United manager Erik ten Hag, while also taking aim at the club’s facilities and their position in the football league. He claimed they had fallen below Liverpool and Manchester City and also expressed his belief that he had been “betrayed” by the club. Ronaldo also took aim at the role of United’s owners and urged fans to continue their protest against the Glazers.
