While much attention is paid to Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions and its final round, featuring contestants Amy Schneider, Sam Buttrey and Andrew He, the show has made waves this week for another reason: a clue on Sunday’s celebrity edition. Host Mayim Bialik read the caption: “In 2021 fugitive Brian Laundrie ended his days in the Myakkahatchee Creek area of Fla. where these long and toothy creatures lived.” The answer was alligators. Laundrie fatally shot himself in October 2021 after writing in a notebook that he had killed his fiancée, Gabby Petito. He was 23. After Laundrie came forward in the episode, an attorney for the Laundrie family, Steven Bertolino, said his clients were upset and noted the backlash online. “The entire Laundrie family is horrified and agrees with all the comments on social media about how unpleasant this was,” he told CBS News on Wednesday. “I think I should apologize. “To be asked this unpleasant Jeopardy! question only underscores the sensationalism surrounding this tragedy and rubs salt in the wounds of a family who were denied rights or privacy when the family themselves did nothing wrong.” Representatives for the show did not immediately respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment. The Laundries weren’t the only ones who thought the item was in poor taste.
