MILWAUKEE – A Ring camera recorded the sound of gunfire near 6th and Rogers on Monday night, June 21st. The medical examiner identified the man who was killed as Mathayus Burton, 18 years old. The family said Burton was a hard worker who would do anything to provide for his family. He leaves behind three children and one on the street. His family wants to know why this happened and who did it. The doorbell camera had a seat in the front row as fire was heard in the south side of Milwaukee on Monday. “You can’t even take your children out,” said one neighbor. The incident marks another tragedy in the neighborhood.
“It does not make sense, a young father downstairs,” said a neighbor. According to police, Burton was shot several times and died on the spot. “It’s crazy to go through this now, to get this phone call,” said Burton’s aunt. “Well, that’s really painful.” SIGN UP TODAY: Receive daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News Burton’s aunt did not want to show her face on camera because she was afraid for her safety, but said she wanted people to know about her nephew. “Matthews was actually out here trying to make the youth and the community a lot better,” said Burton’s aunt. He said he was the father of three children and had a baby on the street. His aunt told him that the family came first. “Matthews was constantly working,” said Burton’s aunt. “He was not the guy to go out on the street.” “I heard all of them being shot from where I live, everyone, so it’s scary,” said one neighbor. A neighbor said that after hearing gunshots several nights, she was also afraid to go out on camera for her own safety. “I do not want to be caught in crossfire,” said one neighbor. “I keep knocking on the floor.” She said her only option is to move.
“I have two boys and a grandfather at home and it is not safe, so I am moving,” he said. “It’s the youth. It has to change,” said Burton’s aunt. “Something has to stop. Something has to go down. We have to make some kind of program, something for these kids.” Burton’s aunt said it’s a necessary change as she holds her niece’s children tightly. Milwaukee police say the shooting was sparked by an argument. No arrests have been made.
