Phillips was shot in the chest and Pereira in the head and abdomen, police said in a statement. He said the autopsy showed the use of a “firearm with standard shotguns”. Police said the suspect would be questioned. Two other men are already in jail for alleged murders: Amarildo Oliveira, known as Pelado, and his brother, Oseney de Oliveira, known as Dos Santos. Phillips and Pereira were last seen on June 5 aboard their boat on the Itaquai River, near the entrance to the Javari Indigenous Territory, which borders Peru and Colombia. Additional remains found at the site near the town of Atalaia do Norte have been confirmed to belong to 41-year-old native Pereira, according to a police statement on Saturday. The remains were found Wednesday after a Pelado fisherman confessed to killing the couple and took police to the place where he would bury the bodies. He told police he used a firearm to commit the crime. The remains had arrived in the capital Brasilia on Thursday for a forensic examination. Violent clashes between fishermen, poachers and government officials took place in the area where Phillips and Pereira went missing.
