The footage is said to have been recorded at the Camden County Detention Center in September. The first video, shared by the lawyer, shows his client appearing to take something on the counter of a jail cell. Deputies come in and are seen trying to restrain him before hitting him repeatedly in the head. In a second video, the fight continues in a hallway, where the man is forced to the ground and appears to be restrained. No sound could be heard on the recordings and it is unclear what may have led to the fight. The man was identified by his attorney as Jarrett Hobbs. Attorneys representing a 41-year-old man who they say can be seen on video being beaten by deputies at the Camden County Detention Center are asking for a criminal investigation, according to a news release from an attorney representing him. “This video is undeniable and the actions of the deputies are inexcusable,” attorney Harry Daniels said in a prepared statement. “Sir. Hobbs entered the Camden County Jail suffering from a psychotic episode and was requesting to be placed in protective custody. But instead of protecting him, these deputies jumped him and mercilessly punched and kicked him…” According to the attorney, at one point, one of Hobbs’ dreadlocks was pulled from his scalp. Daniels said his client refused medical treatment and was placed in solitary confinement. He noted in his deposition that Hobbs was arrested for speeding, driving with a suspended/revoked license and possession of a controlled substance, which are non-violent offenses. Daniels said that after his client was beaten, Hobbs was charged with assault. “As this happened—he was charged with battery, aggravated assault and obstruction,” Daniels told News4JAX. “So they beat him and accused him.” Daniels asked the district attorney to join the investigation. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said it is launching an internal investigation. His announcement reads: “A video posted on social media is part of an incident that occurred at the Camden County Sheriff’s Jail, causing the public to question the actions of correctional officers. Sheriff Jim Proctor and members of the Command Staff reviewed the video. Sheriff Proctor ordered an immediate internal investigation into the incident. This investigation will include all recorded video from the time the inmate entered the facility on September 3, 2022 until his release on September 30, 2022. If deemed necessary, an additional agency will assist in the investigation. “Internal investigations involve video review, interviewing witnesses and documenting recovered evidence, which take time and are not completed overnight. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office has always been an agency that is transparent allowing the public access to all operations of each department. During the investigation, the names of all involved will be kept confidential until the investigation is complete.” Copyright 2022 by WJXT News4JAX – All Rights Reserved.
