Democrats saw Arizona’s 1st congressional district as a critical opportunity as they struggle to hold on to a slim House majority. The seat was included in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red on Blue” program. With 214 House seats now in Republican control and 204 with Democrats, the House majority is still within reach with 16 seats left in play, though a Republican path to victory looks more plausible. Republicans need just 5 more wins to secure a majority in the House. Schweikert, a six-term congressman, secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump before his primary. Schweikert’s Democratic challenger, Jevin Hodge, runs an Arizona nonprofit dedicated to child development. The 28-year-old would be the second-youngest black lawmaker to serve in the House of Representatives.
