The hiker was rescued from the Gulfside Trail on Saturday night. Xi Chen, 53, from Andover, Massachusetts, was hit by severe weather. Fish and Game Department officials said they heard his wife, who said she had received a message from Chen saying he was cold and wet and could not continue. “He further wrote that he felt he would die without rescue,” the department said in a press release. Maintenance officers received multiple rescue calls that day from hikers on the peaks and ridges of the Presidential District at high altitudes. “Conditions on the high peaks were insidious,” the press release said. Rescuers transported Chen more than a mile to the top of Mount Washington, where they put him in a truck and drove him down the mountain highway to a hospital in Berlin. It could not be revived after several hours of rescue efforts, the press release said.
