The federal government is trying to respond to scenes of endless queues, flight delays and daily commotion at airports – particularly at Toronto’s Pearson Airport – a problem that the aviation industry attributes to a lack of federal security and customs officials. However, Alghabra told reporters today that “airlines also have a duty”, saying they had to “honor the end of the deal” for flight cancellations and missing luggage. John Gradek, head of aviation management program at McGill University, says airlines have used Ottawa as a “scapegoat” and are planning more flights than they have the staff or resources to provide, resulting in delays and cancellations. Twists in one section of the airline pipeline can affect others, with overflowing customs areas preventing flight crews from disembarking, for example, or a lack of airline customer service agents exacerbating delays. Alghabra says the airport security service has hired more than 900 inspectors since April, although many are still being trained. This Canadian Press report was first published on June 21, 2022
