Actor Alec Baldwin filed a lawsuit Friday in California against several people associated with the movie “Rust,” according to a complaint obtained by CNN.

Filmmaker Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by the actor last October during a rehearsal for a scene for the film, which was being shot near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The lawsuit is the first legal action in which Baldwin alleges wrongdoing in connection with the shooting.

Baldwin, who is named as a defendant in a 2021 lawsuit by a “Rust” script supervisor, filed the complaint against production armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, assistant director David Halls, armorer assistant Seth Kenney, gun and ammunition supply store . The company Kenney owns, and master master Sarah Zachry.

“More than anyone else on this set, Baldwin is unfairly seen as the perpetrator of this tragedy. With these cross-claims, Baldwin seeks to clear his name and hold the Cross Defendants accountable for their misconduct,” the complaint states.

“This tragedy occurred because live bullets were delivered to the set and loaded into the gun, Gutierrez Reed did not check the bullets or the gun, Halls did not check the gun and yet announced the gun was safe before giving it to Baldwin. and Zachry failed to disclose that Gutierrez Reed had acted recklessly on set and posed a safety risk to those around her,” the complaint alleges, adding that Baldwin did not know these facts, but the defendants did.

“These Cross Defendants are professionals who owed a duty to those on set, including Baldwin, to keep the set safe. Everyone on set, including Baldwin, expected and trusted them to do it. Hutchins would never have instructed Baldwin to point the gun in her direction and pull back the hammer if he thought there was even the slightest chance that it was loaded. Baldwin, who shared the same state of mind as Hutchins at that critical moment, would not have done so under such circumstances,” the lawsuit alleges.

Baldwin is seeking “compensatory, nominal, statutory and punitive damages” through a jury trial, costs related to litigation and other relief to be determined by the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the complaint states.

In an August 2022 interview with CNN, Baldwin blamed the movie set tragedy on Gutierrez Reed and Halls, who handed him the gun.

Jason Bowles, Gutierrez Reed’s attorney, told CNN on Friday, “He was the one who shot Halina and it’s his fault, nobody else’s.”

Asked for comment in August, Halls’ attorney accused Baldwin of shifting blame to others.

Kenney’s lawyers have previously denied responsibility for the shooting.

CNN reached out Friday to attorneys representing the Halls and Kenney for comment on the lawsuit. CNN is seeking contact information for Zachary’s attorney.
