Toronto police responded to reports of a collision between Lawrence Avenue East and Leslie Street shortly after 9 p.m.
Police say a pedestrian was hit by a street sweeper and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and was taken to hospital for examination.
“The driver was very distressed and as a result he was taken to hospital and is currently under medical care there,” Inspector Jeff Basinghwate told reporters at the scene.
It is not clear if the truck was clearing the road at the time of the collision.
The city of Toronto says it is “fully cooperating with the police and its investigation.”
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, as well as our employee, at this very difficult time,” a city spokesman told CP24.
Police are asking Tremont Crescent residents with video surveillance to contact them.
