At about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, police with the Edmonton Police Department gang were passing by a restaurant on Jasper Avenue and 118 Street in the Oliver neighborhood when they noticed “suspicious behavior” between a group. As a result, a 31-year-old man was arrested for obstruction. When the man was taken into custody, police searched him and found a loaded semi-automatic pistol in a bag strapped to his chest. “This arrest demonstrates the prevalence of illegal firearms in our communities,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Stewart, who oversees the gang, said in a press release. “This incident is particularly worrying as this loaded firearm was inside a restaurant frequented by families. “We continue to encourage citizens to always be vigilant and aware of their environment, and also report any suspicious activity to the police.” Yassir Shire has since been charged with possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of an assault weapon dangerous to the public, obstruction of a peace officer and breach of regulation.
