A knife attack in Brussels that left at least one police officer dead is “suspected to be terror-related”, authorities said Thursday.

“It is suspected to be related to terrorism. Of course it will have to be confirmed by the investigation,” Belgian federal prosecutor’s spokesman Eric Van Duyse told CNN.

The incident on Thursday night involved a police patrol being attacked with a knife by a man. “Other officers came as backup and were using their weapons to shoot the attacker to control the person,” a Brussels North police spokesman told CNN via email.

“The injured were taken to the hospital. Initial investigative tasks are underway,” the spokesman added.

The condition of the attacker is not yet clear.

The attack took place around 19:30 local time on Rue d’Aerschot in Brussels’ Schaerbeek borough, according to Van Duyse.

Lawmakers sent their condolences to the family of the slain policeman after news of the attack broke.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his condolences, saying his thoughts are with the family and friends of the dead officer.

“Our police officers risk life and limb every day to keep our society safe. Unfortunately, this is once again evident today,” he tweeted.

Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden described the incident as “terrible drama and heartbreaking news”.

“My thoughts are first and foremost with the next of kin, members of the police force and the entire police organization,” he tweeted.

Brussels mayor Philippe Close called it “unbearable drama” in Brussels.

“We are in solidarity with the police forces. The police protect us and must be protected,” he said.

European Parliament President Roberta Metzola said she was “shocked” by the killing of the police officer on duty.

“The Belgian police have worked so closely with (the European Parliament) over the years that this is personal for us. All our thoughts are with them, their loved ones and everyone in Belgium,” he tweeted.

Belgium has seen many terrorist attacks in the last decade.

In 2017, ISIS claimed responsibility for a knife attack on soldiers in Brussels. The soldiers were slightly injured in the incident, but one managed to shoot the assailant, who later died in hospital.

In June of that year, a suspect was fatally shot at a Brussels transit station after a failed bombing that authorities described as a terrorist attack. In March 2016, coordinated attacks at Brussels airport and a metro station left 31 dead and more than 300 injured.
